On the first day of day at the hospital my supervisor Ms wajeeha gave me a brief introduction of the hospital.she told me that It is Pakistan’s largest cancer hospital and it’s home to the largest radiation oncology centre.
The hospital is a project of the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Trust
A non-profit legal entity established under the laws of Pakistan. The Board of Governors formulates overall policy and consists of bankers, researchers, businessmen and physicians.
Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran Khan is the chairman of the board. The role of the Board includes governance and oversight of the clinical programmes, finances, and resource generation.
Volunteers’ orientation program was organized on the second day.
The representatives of the respective departments addressed the volunteers and gave us the brief introductions of their departments.
The representative of the HR department oriented the volunteers about the activities of the HR department.
The representative of the fire department told the volunteers about the emergency situations and how to react in these situations with the help of different emergency codes.
For this purpose they have organized a department to help people in these situations. The representative of this department oriented the volunteers about the activities of the department.The volunteers visited the hospital on the third day. Walk-In clinic is the door step of the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Trust.
The persons who perform their duties
In the walk-in clinic are two doctors ,Medical Social Officer and a psychiatrist. Before admitting the patients to the hospital the patients are sent to the walk-In clinic of the hospital where they go through different series of tests. The walk-In clinic can accept and reject the patient on the basis of age and the stage of the disease of the patient.
A lecture on financial support was addressed to the volunteers. The financial support department receives applications from the patients who wants support on their financial needs. The patients who want financial support needs to submit an application with their detailed income. The SKMT gives two types of financial supports to the patients.
Day 6 of the Volunteers
In Service contributed to an activity called PAEDS.
We visited different wards of the children and had them talk with us to obtain information on their cases.
After visiting the children wards and obtaining information on their cases, I started studying their cases. My supervisor gave the task to study the cases of different children in the ward. I performed my tasks and started the case study of 04 different children.
The case study on the PAEDS activity continued for three day.
I completed the case study of 08 children and submitted a report on the case study to the supervisor.
Next day I visited the chemotherapy department. I was given a brief introduction about the department.
After obtaining the information of different patients in the chemotherapy department, I started the case study of these patients. Case study of the patients involve all of the information regarding their case and history of their treatment. I reported to my supervisor about my task and case study of the patients.
The next day was our visit to the play room in the children ward.
My supervisor gave me task to study the case history of children in the play room and presented the report to my supervisor.
Our last day of Volunteer in Service
(VIS) was about the visit of the pathology lab. The Shaukat Khanum Memorial Trust pathology laboratory one of the largest and most sophisticated facilities, uses state-of-the-art equipment for all tests setting a standard for result accuracy and reliability.
The Pathology Laboratory consists of the Anatomic and Clinical pathology sections including the blood bank. Both the laboratory and the blood bank are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week with consultant Pathologist available on call round the clock.
